TTCL is a public institution which operates in nationwide, providing high-quality and reliable networks which offer a comprehensive range of telecommunication services to businesses, consumers, operators and the government.
TTCL was established in 1994, after the dissolution of Tanzania Posts and Telecommunications Corporation. The dissolution resulted into separating the telecommunications business from the postal services business, postal bank business and creating an independent communication regulator.
On 23 February 2001, the Government of United Republic of Tanzania signed a Share Subscription Agreement with a strategic investor — a Consortium of DETECON of Germany and Mobile Systems International Cellular Investments Holdings BV (MSI) of Netherlands, (later changed to Celtel International BV and BhartiAirtel Tanzania BV). Pursuant to that Agreement, the Government remained with 65% of share whereas the Strategic Investor obtained 35% of shares.
However, on 23rd of June, 2016 the Government signed a Share Transfer Agreement to conclude the end of business partnership with Bhart Airtel after buying back 35% of its shares and for that matter TTCL is under the ownership of Government by100%.
